Shippensburg, PA Lowest Price Heating OilShippensburg is the oldest town in the Cumberland Valley area. In the 1730s, Scots-Irish families migrated to the area now known as Shippensburg and settled along Burd’s Run. The town was named after Edward Shippen, who was a well-known resident of Lancaster and a former mayor of Philadelphia.

In the early 1700s, Samuel Perry built the Widow Piper’s Tavern, which became home to the earliest Cumberland County Courts in 1750. Today, it is the Shippensburg Civic Center. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since the 1970s and is located in the Shippensburg Historic District.

In 1755, the governor of Shippensburg demanded that a fort be constructed after General Braddock’s defeat. His idea was to protect troops and colonists from Native Americans during the French and Indian War. Over the course of the next year, a log palisade, deep well and numerous other buildings were constructed.

In the 1870s, Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania was built. The school is still in operation today, and there are almost 7,000 undergraduate and 1,300 post-graduate students.

Today, Shippensburg boasts an impressive Historic District. The national historic district encompasses a business district and residential areas that showcase Vernacular Georgian and Late Victorian architectural styles. Some of the most prominent locations in the district include the Rippey House, William Brookins House, Methodist Church, Steward-Goodhart House, Lutheran Church and Presbyterian Church.
