While the town is known today as Marion, it was originally called Independence, PA until the early 1800s. A post office using the name Marion has been in existence since 1833, and the new name comes from Francis Marion. Francis was an army officer throughout the American Revolutionary War and went by the nickname Swamp Fox.

Settlements were initially made in the Marion, PA area as early as 1748. A tavern was located on the outskirts of town that served as a gathering place for locals and travelers passing through. The first general store in the town opened in 1822 by Major Cook. Marion Station, a stop on the Cumberland Valley Railroad, initially opened in the mid-1800s, and it attracted even more attention to the area. A warehouse was built in 1862 by Diehl & Co. and surrounded by several homes for warehouse workers.

The population of Marion, PA sits at just over 1,000 residents. The town is often confused with Point Marion, PA, but the two are distinct places located in different townships. Today, the town is known for the awesome community, small businesses and rich history.
