Greencastle Fuel Oil

Greencastle, PA is a charming historic community in Franklin County. Every year, Greencastle homeowners face frigid weather, snow, ice and sleet. If you are a Greencastle homeowner, you don’t need to resign yourself to sky-high energy bills. Penn-Mar Oil Company provides the entire Greencastle, PA area with affordable and convenient heating oil delivery throughout the coldest months of the year.

Greencastle, PA was founded in 1782 and named after Greencastle, Ireland. The town was initially made up of 246 lots, and by 1790, there were over 60 homes in the town. The town had a large role in the Latter Day Saint movement of the mid-1800s. Sidney Rigdon, one of the three main candidates for succession in the Latter Day Saint movement, led his followers to Pennsylvania and created a settlement in Greencastle of approximately 200 people.

In the Civil War, Greencastle and other Franklin County towns were part of the 126th Pennsylvania Infantry. The Civil War hit close to home in 1863 when the Army of Northern Virginia, led by General Robert E. Lee, invaded southern Pennsylvania as part of the Gettysburg Campaign. On July 2nd, the Federal Cavalry patrol marched into the town square and captured numerous Confederate Cavalry members carrying important correspondence.

In the late 19th century, the town grew as a result of the Industrial Revolution and the construction of numerous factories within city limits. In the early 1900s, the famous local businessman Philip Baer began the “Old Home Week” tradition. Every three years, Greencastle residents gather to celebrate a town-wide reunion, reflect on the past years and socialize. The celebration is still going on today, and there is one scheduled for 2019. Today, Greencastle remains a thriving community with schools, businesses and historic homes.
