Fayetteville, PA is a charming community in Franklin County with a population of just over 3,000. While the residents love the small-town feel, they often have mixed feelings about the harsh winter weather! The snow, ice and frigid temperatures add up to high heating bills for many homeowners. If you’re a Fayetteville, PA homeowner, you’re in luck! Penn-Mar Oil Company offers affordable, responsive heating oil delivery throughout the coldest months of the year.

Fayetteville, PA has a storied history that begins in the 1700s. The town’s post office has been operating since 1826, and it was named after Marquis de Lafayette, an American Revolutionary War general. Despite the town’s relatively small size, it has numerous notable residents including Tom Brookens, a Major League Baseball third baseman, and Benjamin Franklin Heintzleman, a governor of Alaska.

Like nearby Chambersburg, Fayetteville was a vibrant free African American community. The location of the town, just above the Mason and Dixon line, made it a popular area for escaping and freed slaves to settle. By the 1860 census, Fayetteville and Franklin County were home to 1,800 black or mixed-race residents. At the time, that was the fifth-highest number of any county in Pennsylvania.

The success of the Underground Railroad in Franklin County is also a notable part of Fayetteville history. The mountain caves, dense forests and thriving African American communities helped to preserve the secrecy needed for running the operation. Many free slaves chose to settle in the area due to the similar crops and topography to the Shenandoah Valley region of Virginia.

Today, Fayetteville and the surrounding area remain spots rich with African American history. Numerous churches in the area are still standing today and holding services. Descendants of the first African American community members in Franklin County, including relatives of some African American Union soldiers, are still living in the area and honoring their unique heritage.

If you are a Fayetteville, PA homeowner in need of a more cost-effective way to keep your home warm during the coldest months of the year, we can help. Penn-Mar Oil Company is here to help. To learn more about our services or schedule a delivery today, give us a call at (717) 276-9623
