Cavetown, MD is a Washington County community with almost 1,5000 residents. The town is filled with historic places including The Willows. The Willows is a farm complex that was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. It contains a two-story Federal-style brick home along with a smokehouse, brick necessary, springhouse, slave quarters and two frame barns.

The property was first established in 1769 when Ludwick Huyett purchased two tracts of land from Jonathan Hager. Eventually, his son Daniel purchased half of his father’s property and created what is now known as The Willows. Years ago, there was a blacksmith’s shop on the property, which you can see near the driveway today. The interior of the home is gorgeous and filled with trends from the 1800s. The back portion of the house wasn’t constructed until the 1860s, and it contains a kitchen, pantry, dining room and enclosed porch.

Today, the house still has the traditional gravel basement floor that was utilized before homes were waterproof to ensure rapid drainage. It remains furnished with the same things that would’ve been on display when the house was in its heyday, and it includes interesting memories from over five generations of Huyett family members. Today, a descendant of the family still lives at the Cavetown property and is working to restore it.
