Cascade, MD has approximately 1,200 residents who love the small-town feeling of the area, the close proximity to Pennsylvania and the storied history of many places in the community. Fort Ritchie is a notable landmark in Cascade. It was a military installation from 1926-1998 and operated throughout World War II and the Cold War.

Initially, the land occupied by Fort Ritchie was owned by the Buena Vista Ice Company of Philadelphia. The plan was to cut ice from frozen lakes and then ship it using the Western Maryland Railroad’s Baltimore-Hagerstown line to southern locations and Baltimore and Washington, D.C. After creating the first manmade lake, the company realized there was a big hiccup in the plan, as the exhaust from the trains put soot on the ice. In 1926, the company closed due to lower demand for natural ice.

When the Maryland National Guard needed to find a new location for training camp, they chose the Cascade, MD site thanks to the close proximity to the railroad and access to a telegraph line. The Maryland National Guard operated Fort Ritchie from 1926-1942 when the US army activated the Military Intelligence Training Center and began training almost 20,000 professionals. Eventually, Fort Ritchie was closed following the 1995 Base Realignment and Closure Commission. Today, the Fort Ritchie property remains in Cascade, MD and it is designated as a sustainable community.
