Saint Thomas, PA has plenty of history, but much of it was lost to the sands of time. Confederates burned the county seat of Franklin County, Chambersburg, in 1864. As a result, all recorded history of the town was lost in an instant. Thankfully, historians were able to interview older members of the town who indicated that the area was settled in the 1740s. Numerous families with the last name “Campbell” were all part of the first settlement, and it was originally known as “Campbells” and then “Campbelltown.”

Eventually, William Archibald suggested that the town be named Saint Thomas after Thomas Campbell, who planned the village in the early 1800s. The town was formally organized around the same time that the St. Thomas Presbyterian Church was also founded in 1818. Shortly after the founding of the Presbyterian Church, an Evangelical Lutheran Church and German Reformed Church were also constructed.

Today, an 1810 limestone Tollhouse and small parcel of land in Saint Thomas serve as the home to the Franklin County Historical Society. The building was owned by the St. Thomas Development company and worked as a tollbooth for the Chambersburg and Bedford Turnpike roads for over 100 years. The house is still standing today and can be viewed by visitors wanting to learn more about the Saint Thomas, PA area.
